Emu Oil Helps Stimulate Hair & Skin Growth

Excerpts from "Emu Oil: Reexamining a Natural Remedy With Today's Technology."

Michael Holick, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Medicine, Physiology, and Dermatology at Boston University School of Medicine, conducted a study involving processed emu oil, and the results were so outstanding that they quickly became a topic of conversation in many medical and other journals.

Dr. Holick revealed that he and his associates had been very interested in looking at factors that stimulate and inhibit both skin and hair growth...

"They had told me about the wondrous things that it's doing, at least from the folklore of the Aboriginal people and also from their own anecdotal experience. My feeling was that the only way to really know whether or not this oil has some biologic property was to do a control study in a laboratory setting..."

"We found that there was about a 20% increase in the proliferative activity, or the growth activity of the skin in the animals... " said Dr. Holick. "And when we looked at the hair follicles, and the thickness of the skin, it showed that the hair follicles were much more robust, and that the skin thickness was remarkably increased, suggesting... the stimulation of skin growth and hair growth in these animals. Also, we discovered in the same test that over 80% of hair follicles that had been asleep were woken up, and began growing hair."

"A hair follicle goes through a cycle. It goes from a resting stage into an active growth period, and then it goes back to sleep again. We woke up all the hair follicles by stimulating them, and then we wanted to see if we could further stimulate these hair follicles by topically applying emu oil. We found that there was an enhancement in the growth activity of the hair follicles. So it gives us a very good scientific indication that we were stimulating skin growth," Dr. Holick elaborated.

Some more information from the same book mentioned above:

According to an article by Dr. Michael F. Holick and James F. Kinney appearing in Drug & Cosmetic Industry magazine in January of 1996, Dr. Holick and his colleagues have been interested in developing new products that will specifically enhance skin and hair growth. It was asserted that the "ideal topical moisturizer that would help aging skin should have the ability to help reverse skin dryness and scaling by enhancing the ability of the skin's upper layers to hold on to water. If the product could also penetrate into the epidermis and stimulate epidermal growth to rejuvenate its rete ridges and could enhance the thickness of the dermis, this product would be ideally suited to help the ravages of skin aging."

The article notes that additional research s needed to determine whether the effects that were seen in mice are equally applicable to humans.

Benefits of Emu Oil

Emu oil is an all natural substance extracted from the fat glands of emus, which has been proven to have extraordinary health benefits, including hair loss prevention. In a study conducted by Dr. Michael Holick of Boston University it was shown that when emu oil was applied to the skin three times daily there was a 20% increase in skin growth activity and 80% of dormant hair follicles were reactivated. Those suffering from androgenic alopecia (pattern baldness) have thinner skin on the scalp. The skin thickening provided by emu oil not only restores the scalp to it’s healthy state, but stimulates new cell growth, allowing hair follicles which have fallen into the telogen phase to once again produce new hairs.

There are three phases in the hair growth cycle: anagen, catagen, and telogen. The anagen phase is the growth phase. In this phase active cells receive nutrients which enable cell division and the creation of new hairs. Existing hairs also continue to grow, becoming longer over time. How long hair follicles will remain in this phase is generally determined by genetics. The second phase is the catagen phase. This is a resting phase in which the papilla detaches from the nourishing blood supply. The hair follicle shrinks and the shaft is pushed upwards. The finally phase is the telogen phase. In this phase the follicle remains dormant. Normally, after 1-4 months follicles in this phase will cycle back into the anagen phase and begin producing hairs once again. However, in those suffering from pattern baldness, shrunken hair follicles remain retracted and do not return to the growth phase. Hairs from these inactive follicles thin, break, and are shed. Unless the follicles return to the growth phase this hair thinning and loss will be permanent. Emu oil has the proven power to restore shrunken follicles, stimulating cell production and returning follicles to the anagen phase.

There are many treatments on the market which boast the power to re-grow hair. While these products can produce re-growth results in the crown area of the head, it is widely known that they are almost entirely incapable of re-growing hair in the frontal section of the scalp. This means that although hair may return to the back of the head, the receding frontal hair line will remain. Emu oil has received a great deal of positive feedback in regard to re-growth in the frontal section of the scalp. In fact, many users have experienced the return of villous (fuzz) in the frontal section within weeks of beginning emu oil treatments

A huge factor in the ability of emu oil to produce such amazing results is it’s oleic acid content. Oleic acid deep penetrates the skin assuring that the total benefit of protein rich emu oil can be achieved. Emu oil also happens to be a great emulsifier (it mixes completely with water). This means that emu oil will penetrate the skin without leaving any oily residue. It also provides moisturizing power. In fact, emu oil enhances the skins ability to retain water, making it a wonderful skin softener. In addition to all these extraordinary benefits, emu oil is an anti-inflammatory. This makes it safe and beneficial to the scalp for more than just hair re-growth. Inflamed hair follicles will be soothed, skin will be moisturized, and follicles will be totally revitalized.

As if all these incredible benefits weren’t enough, emu oil also boasts bacteriostasis. In other words, emu oil does not grow bacteria in it’s pure form. This gives emu oil a very long and stable shelf life. Emu oil is non-comedogenic and totally irritant free. In fact, it’s irritant factor has been found to be comparable to that of putting water on skin i.e. totally non-existant!
